CENTER FOR DIGITAL AGRICULTURE OF SERBIA LAUNCHED AT THE BIOSENSE INSTITUTE

Published: 03 October 2017

The Center for Digital Agriculture of Serbia was launched at the ceremony held at the BioSense Institute on October 2, 2017. The opening of the Centre and releasing of the AgroSense digital platform represent vital steps towards introducing innovative solutions based on information technologies, whose aim is to boost competitiveness and efficiency of agriculture in the country.

The Center was officially declared open by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabić. The ceremony was also attended by the President of the Provincial Government Igor Mirović, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Branislav Nedimović, the Provincial Secretary for Higher Education and Scientific Reasearch Prof. Dr. Zoran Milošević, the Provincial Secretary for Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Vuk Radojević, MSc, and the Rector of the University of Novi Sad Prof. Dr. Dušan Nikolić.

The Center for Digital Agriculture of Serbia and the AgroSense digital platform stem from the synergy between agriculture and information technologies through the development of scientific research. The AgroSense digital platform, whose essential services will be free of charge for all farmers, enables the mobile phone to become a new tool for exchanging timely, geographically accurate and relevant information on the activities related to agricultural production, such as: satellite monitoring of crop performance, localized meteorological data, digitalized data on chemical composition of soil and its texture, field activity diary, the seed and chemical preparations catalog and the catalog of the most contemporary technological solutions for precision agriculture. Owing to the Center for digital technologies in agriculture, Serbia will be the only country outside the European Union with free usage of satellite data.

The BioSense Institute is the Research and Development Institute for Information Technologies in Biosystems, which was proclaimed by the European Union as one of 30 scientific and research institutions in Europe with the greatest potential in the field of biotechnologies. The Institute was established by transforming the center bearing the same name, which was created within the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the University of Novi Sad.

The project Antares of the BioSense Institute won the first place in 2016, acquiring a budget of 28 million euros within the Horizon 2020 program, while competing with almost 200 projects across Europe, among which were the projects of the leading European and world scientific and research institutions.
