INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MIGRATIONS (PLPR) HELD SUCCESSFULLY

The international scientific conference Migrations - Impacts, Law and Spatial Planning was held at the Central University Building of the University of Novi Sad from February 19 to 23, 2018. The conference was jointly organized by the Center for Strategic and Advanced Studies of the University of Novi Sad and the International Academic Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights – PLPR.

The official working sessions of the Conference were preceded by the PhD Workshop, held on February 19, 2018.

The conference was officially opened by the Academician Vladimir Kostić, President of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, on February 20, 2018. At the opening ceremony of the conference, the attendees were also addressed by Prof. Dr. Dušan Nikolić, Rector of the University of Novi Sad, and Prof. Dr. Richard Norton, President of the International Academic Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights and Professor at the University of Michigan, USA. Keynote speeches at the conference were delivered by Prof. Dr. Gábor Hamza, Full Professor at the School of Law of the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Mr. Mirko Stefanović, Retired Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia, and Prof. Dr. Martin Wickel from the HafenCity University in Hamburg, Germany.

Abstracts for the conference were prepared by 125 authors from almost all parts of the world. At the conference, 85 interdisciplinary conference papers were presented in the fields of migrations, spatial planning, law and property rights.

In addition to taking part in the working sessions of the conference, the conference participants were given an opportunity to visit significant cultural, scientific, and political institutions in Novi Sad and the Province. During their visit to the Matica Srpska on February 20, 2018, the participants were welcomed by President of the Matica Srpska Prof. Dr. Dragan Stanić. On that occasion, the capital edition published by the Matica Srpska entitled ʻThe Atlas of Settlements in Vojvodinaʼ (Atlas naselja Vojvodine) was presented by Prof. Dr. Mlađen Jovanović from the Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management of the Faculty of Sciences. Moreover, President of the Provincial Government Mr. Igor Mirović hosted a reception for the conference participants on February 21, 2018. Mayor of Novi Sad Mr. Miloš Vučević also received the conference participants on February 22, 2018 at the City Hall. The participants also visited the Gallery of Matica Srpska, the Museum of Vojvodina and the City Museum of Novi Sad, the Bistrica neighbourhood and Sremski Karlovci.

The conference was organized with support from the Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management of the Faculty of Sciences, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the University of Novi Sad.

The annual conferences of the International Academic Association on Planning, Law, and Property Rights are held once a year at some of the leading universities in the world (in 2017 it was held at the University of Hong Kong, and in 2016 at the University of Bern). The conference held at the University of Novi Sad is the 12th annual conference of the aforesaid international academic association. The next conference will be held in 2019 at the Texas A&M University, USA, which was ranked between the 101st and 150th place on the Shanghai Ranking in 2017.

Two parallel conferences on migrations during the global conference

In the same week as the global conference, two other parallel conferences on migrations were held at the University of Novi Sad: the Interregional Conference on Migrations and the Regional Conference on Migrations: The Legal Aspects of Migrations in the Region – the Balkan Route. The interregional conference, held at the Central University Building, on February 22, 2018, was focused on the topic of migrations from the point of view of two regions, the Adriatic-Ionian Region and the Balkans.The conference was attended by representatives of the University of Novi Sad, the University of Bologna, and the University of Trieste.

The regional conference entitled The Legal Aspects of Migrations in the Region – the Balkan Route was held on February 20, 2018 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Novi Sad.
