Published: 14 November 2018

A young scientist from the University of Novi Sad Jelena Vladić, scientific associate at the Department of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering of the Faculty of Technology, University of Novi Sad, is a winner of the prestigious Danubius Young Scientist Award for Serbia.

Danubius Young Scientist Award was created by the Federal Ministry for Science, research and economy of Austria and the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe – IDM, in order to honour and award young individuals who have achieved exceptional results in their scientific activities, significant for the Danube Region.

The award is granted to 14 young scientists – one in each country that is part of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Romania and Ukraine). It seeks to highlight the scientific work and talent of young researchers and enhance the visibility of the scientific community in the region. Moreover the award encourages young scientists to engage themselves in the scientific examination of the multifaceted issues and questions specifically related to the Danube Region.

Among the award criteria are the following: scientific excellence and innovative approach of the academic work; thematic relevance of the scientific work for issues/problems of the Danube Region; relevance of the scientific work beyond the national borders; potential of the candidate, such as integration in international networks, participation in scientific projects, publication history, experience in teaching, etc. One of the criteria is also that the candidate has received their master/PhD maximum five years ago.

Dr. Jelena Vladić is a scientific associate and an assistant at the Faculty of Technology of the University of Novi Sad. She has participated in the educational activities within the study program of Pharmaceutical Engineering and is also focused on research activities in the field of Pharmaceutical Technologies and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. A focus of her research has been the extraction of bioactive compounds from medicinal herbs, by-products of the food industry and microalgae. The application of the results from her research will enable the implementation of new technological procedures, mainly extraction methods, in the field of processing raw materials containing valuable compounds that can be incorporated in new products after their extraction, with a purpose of their market placement in a form of supplements or in a form of enriched food products.

The conferral ceremony of Danubius Young Scientist Award was organized on November 8, 2018, on the first day of the Annual Conference of the Danube Rectors’ Conference, hosted by the Comenius University in Bratislava. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Dejan Jakšić, Rector of the University of Novi Sad and Prof. Dr. Miroslav Vesković, former Rector of the University of Novi Sad and former President of the Danube Rectors’ Conference.
